About Fertility Awareness
What is fertility awareness?
Fertility awareness is the daily practice of observing and tracking your body’s signs of fertility across the menstrual cycle. These signs include cervical fluid/mucus, basal body temperature, and changes in the position of your cervix. Paying attention to these and learning to interpret them allows us to tune into and understand our bodies’ natural menstrual cycle rhythms.
Practicing fertility awareness helps us know when our bodies are most fertile, when our period is coming, and how our bodies react to different dietary and environmental factors. It also gives us special insight into our health. We can then use this information to help us conceive, avoid pregnancy naturally, simply learn more about our bodies, or take action to address health concerns. Our bodies are always talking to us, we just have to learn how to listen!

Menstrual Cycles and Health
In biology classes, we’re usually taught that the body is made up of separate systems. In medicine, each system has its own specialist. So, when we think of the reproductive system, we usually only think about its role in reproduction. But the thing is, all the systems in our bodies are very interconnected. They talk and react to each other. The reproductive system is no different! Reproductive hormones have important roles in our bodies beyond the reproductive system, and how well other systems are working can also affect our reproductive system. This means that reproductive health is an integral piece of overall health, and is actually a reflection of your general health. The menstrual cycle is a fifth vital sign, and one of the first places that problems pop up when something in our bodies is off. Charting it gives us the data we need to understand our unique cycle and take action for our health.
Who is fertility awareness for?
Fertility awareness can be used by anyone with a menstrual cycle! It doesn’t matter whether your cycles are regular or irregular, whether you just started your period or are nearing menopause, whether you just came off hormonal birth control or just had a baby. You can learn to chart your menstrual cycle and gain valuable insight into your health.
The most common reasons people choose to learn fertility awareness are to help them conceive, for a natural form of contraception, to learn more about their health, and to address menstrual health concerns.
